Q: What has been one of the most difficult things for you to endure?
A: The most difficult thing I have ever dealt with is divorce. Obviously the pain and uncertainty are difficult, but I also think you are mourning the loss of an identity. I was no longer part of a couple... and I began to think of myself as “damaged goods.” I cringed when I heard the word “divorcée.”
But once after we had separated, I was telling my mom about my fears and she said okay so face your fears. What’s the worst thing that could happen? I thought for awhile and I said ughhh I’d have to date again. And just like that...after I looked at it through that lense...it didn’t seem so bad. Then she said okay well yes that’s bad, but you could just embrace it. So I did. I made it fun and I approached the process with enthusiasm and excitement. Interestingly enough it wasn’t a horrible process and I think the men I dated enjoyed dating someone that wasn’t cynical or bitter. Now when I’m facing a difficulty or a challenge I draw strength from the fact that I survived that and I will survive this too.
Q: What’s your life's motto?
A: My life’s motto is never ever ever ever EVER give up.
Q: What’s your one superpower?
A:I think my one superpower is a sense of humor. I use it to entertain people and to cheer them up. I use it to put things in perspective. I use it to distract and to diffuse. I use it to lighten situations and to make people feel welcome and at home. But mostly I use it because it’s much more appealing than the alternative and it makes life so much more fun.
Q: You are not only a Woman Warrior, but you’re also a Mama Warrior with two beautiful kids. What is one lesson you want your children to never forget?
A:I want to teach my children to be egalitarians. I want them to treat people of all colors and backgrounds and occupations and incomes equally. Every human being deserves acceptance and respect.
